What are heirloom vegetables?
Heirloom, or "open pollinated" plants will grow from seed true to type, meaning that if seeds are saved from a heirloom variety, they will grow to produce a fruit that is identical to the parent plant.

Why grow heirlooms?
Our vegetable diversity is dissapearing fast! in the last decade or so, we have lost about 90% of our heirloom vegetable diversity, and when a variety goers extinct, it is gone forever. By growing heirlooms you can ensure that the varieties you grow can be grown year after year, as well as acclimate to your climate and location. Growing heirlooms puts the power of seed in your hands.

Do you grow any hybrids?
No. We do not. We are by no means anti hybrid, as hybrids do have their place, hybridization ensures that you have to go back and buy new seeds every year, all our seeds are heirloom, so you can buy them once, and grow them forever if you choose to do so!

YES! We are glad to take in new varieties, and are very passionate about preserving and protecting the varieties that we have been blessed with! ~ if you would like to donate seeds, try to include their story, and send a small number (at least 10 or 20) to us at Mad River Seeds P.O. box 273 Ardenvoir, WA 98811

What kind of fertilizer do you use? Pesticides?
We do a lot of our own composting, and source organic manure from a select few farmers to grow our vegetables in. We believe that the BEST fertilizer is the farmers shadow, the only fertilizers we use are organic worm tea that we make here on the farm, as well as a solution made from water and Comfrey leaves (when plants are in bloom). As far as pesticides go, we use companion planting, and careful inspection of our plants which keeps us pest free for the most part. In a emergency situation, we will use a little bit of organic NEEM seed oil which is 100% natural, and very effective.
